Vidya of 2010

We’re almost into 2011, so it’s time to post up the final entry of 2010 and have a bit of a moment reflecting on this years video games and what we all got up to.

Last year felt like a pretty busy year for me in terms of video games… I feel like I bought and played more video games than I ever had before… but this year was different for me… When 2009 had ended and I had written up my previous entry, Vidya of 2009, I felt that it was definitely one of the greatest years of video gaming for me since I had bought more games that year than any other year before it… and a lot of them were pretty damn good. At the beginning and most of the way through 2010, I felt that it wasn’t as good a year as the last and that the games weren’t quite as good.

However, as I look through my list of purchases for this year and compare them to last year, I’m starting to wonder how much better last year really was… cause this year has just achieved a new milestone for me beyond anything that I could’ve predicted.

Last year, I had bought around 40 games, most of them okay, some of them being excellent… and for the most part, I was able to finish those games pretty quickly after I had bought them… but this year… damn.

2010 may have started off like every other year for me… five games starting off in February with the two most mentionable being Mass Effect 2 and BioShock 2, the rest of the months followed pretty closely to how 2009 went. Pokémon SoulSilver, No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Halo: Reach, GoldenEye 007, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood and Donkey Kong Country Returns just to name a few of the ones I enjoyed the most.

All very enjoyable games and until December rolled over, I had about 10 fewer games bought this year than last year… of course things changed when I downloaded Steam thanks to Mav gifting me Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3. Steam ended up having one of its famous sales and I think I just went mad. So yeah… 181 games bought this year (SO FAR, there’s still ONE more day left) with 141 of them being Steam games and 8 of them being games downloaded from Good Old Games.

I can’t say that I’ve finished all of these games, let alone started the majority of them… but I certainly won’t be game starved for a very long time… though, it makes me worried because there’s a fuck-tonne of things coming out in 2011 that’s going to bury me even deeper in games to play. It’s gonna be totally nuts!

Of course… there is one last thing I would like to talk about before I end this entry…

Usually, it’s very difficult for me to pinpoint what my favourite games are at any time. You ask me that question and I won’t know what to answer with because I end up liking a lot of things. To add to that, I have never actually hated a game until a certain game that was released in September… You all know the one I’m talking about. Metroid: Other M… the first game ever in the history of my gaming life that I have ever HATED. If it wasn’t for Steam and all the games I had bought in December, this one game would’ve ruined 2010 for me completely. That’s all I want to say about it now, I’m done with it.

So, with that, the real question is… How was your gaming life in 2010? …I wonder if anyone has bought as many games as I did… damn.
